Complaint against Sanitary Inspector Knighta
Wong San married woman rosiding at No. 40, East Street, states:-
On the 26th. instant an Inspector came to my husband Liu Tuk's shop, No. 40, East Street and invited my husband and myself to go up to his house in Seymour Road No. 4. I have known him for 5 or 6 years. He brought down a chair and asked me to go up in it to his house. I went up and he and my husband follow- -ed. As soon as we entered the house the Inspector locked the door and took us up to the 2nd. floor to a room the door of which he also locked. He then told me to sit down in the veran
-dah. Then he said I have something to say to you. I want your husband to go away for a minute. we then smacked my husband on the back and then said:- I love your wife very much can you spare her for 31 days. Then he accosted me. I said this was not customary. He has during the past two years sont ratcatchers and coolies for my husband. I then wanted to get up but he would not let me. Then the Inspector got a drink for my husband. While the boy was opening the lemonade I and my husband tried to go away but the Inspector would not let me go. He forced my husband to have a drink. I wanted to get away but he would not let me. I then said I will come tomorrow if you will let me go now. The Inspector then said: If I let you go now you must come back at 5.00 p.m. I then went out with my husband and the
Inspector again sent for me but I refused to go.
At 5.45 p.m. he sent another boy for me. I asked the boy not to come back again. My husband was also sent for but he would not go. At about 7 p.m. the Inspector cane down personally with a servant to our house. He asked my husband why I had not come up. My husband said that I was out. A ratcatcher then told my husband to go away or he would be beaten so he went to the Hang Fa restaurant. I was smoking in the opposite house to my own in a shop No. 45, East Street but had not enough tobacco so came back to my house to get it and found the Inspector in my room. I turned back and the Inspector chased me into No. 45,
